Introduction
This is the hands-on vessel inspection: identify the system from the nameplate, verify the installation against the ABYC specification, document the findings, and issue a compliance report that insurers and charter operators require. The goal is the complete inspection workflow — from first contact with the system to the final report — and a document that is defensible, repeatable, and audit-ready.
Why it matters: the document is the deliverable. It is what an insurer, a surveyor, or a resale buyer uses to verify the vessel was serviced to code.
The inspection workflow
- Identify the system from the nameplate — family, model, refrigerant, voltage, phase.
- Verify the installation against ABYC E-11 — compressor protection, ventilation, piping,
electrical connections.
- Verify the installation against ABYC A-38 — seacock, strainer, overboard discharge,
fresh water tank, UV sterilizer.
- Document each finding — compliant, non-compliant, or requires further investigation.
- Issue the compliance report — a written summary of the system, the standard, the findings,
and the recommendations.
The compliance report
The report is a written, defensible, audit-ready record. It includes:
- The system identified (family, model, refrigerant, electrical).
- The standard applied (E-11 / A-38).
- Each finding, classified (compliant / non-compliant / investigate).
- The recommendations.
This is the same workflow that a surveyor or an insurer will use to verify the vessel, and it is the standard against which your certification is measured.
Remember this line: the inspection is done when the document is audit-ready — not when the
checklist is ticked.
