Introduction

Insurance, resale, and charter compliance all hinge on ABYC documentation. This chapter maps ABYC E-11 (HVAC) and A-38 (plumbing) to the Dometic and SpotZero systems you will be working on. A system that does not meet the standard will not pass inspection, and it is a liability for the owner.

Why it matters: the ABYC standards are not abstract — they map directly to the systems you service. This is the skill that separates a tech who services a system from a tech who certifies one.

02

ABYC E-11: HVAC requirements

ABYC E-11 covers the installation of compressors, condensers, evaporators, and controls. The key requirements:

  1. The compressor must be protected from liquid slugging.
  2. The condenser must have adequate ventilation.
  3. The refrigerant lines must be properly supported and insulated.
  4. The electrical connections must be rated for the compressor's starting current.

E-11 is not a suggestion — it is the standard that insurers and charter operators use to verify that a vessel's HVAC system is installed to code.

03

ABYC A-38: plumbing requirements

ABYC A-38 covers the installation of water makers, freshwater systems, and the raw-water loop. The key requirements for a water maker:

  1. The system must be installed with a seacock, a strainer, and an overboard discharge.
  2. The fresh water tank must be properly sized and vented.
  3. The UV sterilizer must be installed downstream of the membrane.

A-38 also covers the raw-water loop: the seacock must be accessible, the strainer must be serviceable, and the overboard discharge must be properly located.

04

Mapped to Dometic and SpotZero

A Dometic DW Series installation must meet E-11 for the HVAC side and A-38 for the plumbing side. A SpotZero installation must meet the same standards, but the modular configuration means the requirements are distributed across more components.

When you inspect a vessel, you are not just checking the system — you are verifying that the installation meets the ABYC standard.

The line to remember

Remember this line: the standard is the deliverable. A system that meets E-11 and A-38 is a

system that passes inspection, and it is a system the owner can insure and resell.
