Introduction
This is the full repair cycle on a live marine refrigeration system: diagnose the failure, identify the component, perform the repair, verify the charge, and document the work to ABYC specification. The goal is the complete workflow — from first contact with the system to final documentation — without cutting corners.
Why it matters: this is the same workflow you will run on a live call, and it is the standard against which your certification is measured.
The complete workflow
- Read the nameplate — identify the system: family, model, refrigerant, voltage, phase.
- Connect the gauges — read the suction and discharge pressures at steady state.
- Calculate — the superheat at the evaporator outlet and the subcooling at the condenser outlet.
- State the charge state — low, correct, or high — and justify it with the numbers.
- Identify the failure point — walk the raw-water loop and the refrigerant circuit.
- Open the system — replace the failed component and the suction drier.
- Evacuate — to 500 microns and hold.
- Weigh in the charge — to the manufacturer's specification.
- Verify — the superheat and subcooling are within spec.
- Document to ABYC standard — what was found, what was done, what was recommended, and the final readings.
The lab standard
In the lab, you run this cycle on a live system and produce a document that is defensible, repeatable, and audit-ready. The document is the deliverable: it is what an insurer, a surveyor, or a resale buyer uses to verify the system was serviced to code.
Remember this line: the repair is done when the numbers are within spec and the document
is audit-ready — not when the part is installed.
